    9 DAYS    SHIRA ROUTE

Day 1   Arusha :Arrival in Arusha for dinner and overnight at Meru simba lodge. 

Day 2    Lemosho Forest Camp: After breakfast, drive to Lodrosi gate introduction to your porters and guides then start your trek through the forest arrive at the camp for dinner and overnight  (8,700’, 2-3 hours walking). As this area is home to a variety of game including buffalo, an armed park ranger will accompany you. (B, L, D) Day 3 Shira Cave.

Day 3    Shira Cave. Leave the forest behind and enter the Moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. There is a tangible sense of wilderness, especially when the afternoon mists come in! Walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral, a huge buttress of rock flanked by steep pinnacles, before reaching the next camp near Shira Camp for dinner and overnight (12,200 ft’, 6-8 hours. 

Day 4   Barranco.Enjoy a morning of gentle ascents and panoramic views, as you leave the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (14,750’) you descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (12,800’, 5-7 hours walking), sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. Watch for soaring raptors. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp (13,000 ft) 4-5 hrs. 

Day 5   Karanga.The path climbs steeply out of the Barranco Valley and leads to an undulating trail on the southeastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern ice fields. Stop for lunch in the Karanga Valley, the last water point before climbing to Karanga Campsite for overnight  (13,700’, 3-4 hours walking). 

Day 6 Barafu:After breakfast climb steeply to reach the Barafu campsite (15,100’, 3-5 hours) arrive at barafu for your dinner the rest up to 1200hrs

 Day 7   Uhuru /Mweka Camp: Start at 1:00 a.m.  climb  to summit via stella point arrive  during the sun rise  then ascent  down to Mweka hut for  dinner, and overnight at Mweka Camp (12,500’, 11-15 hours. 

Day 8   Arusha;After your breakfast  descend through the open moorlands, forest glades, and rain forests to the park gate at Mweka (5,412’. 4-6 hours ). Then drive to Arusha for dinner and overnight at Meru simba lodge. 

Day 9    Depart. Free day until your late transfer to the airport for your flight back  Home.
